In December 2024, the owners of Dobson Gifts and General Hardware announced that they would soon be closing their doors after 80 years in business. Located on Wade Hampton Boulevard, co-owners Terry and Debbie Dobson reflected on their time serving Greer and communities around the state. “It’s kind of bittersweet, and I’m getting old,” laughed Terry. “It’s about time. I’d like to thank everyone in the community for 80 years of support and loyalty.” According to the Dobsons, the store was opened by Terry’s father in 1945 at the corner of Main and Poinsett.” Then in ’63, they moved. to what was Community Cash and operated there from ’64 to ’99,” Terry said. The Wade Hampton location in Greer opened in 1986 and is the last remaining store of the two that once operated at the same time.”We were a gift hardware store,” said Terry “Now we’ve had to transition into more gifts with equipment. That’s what we’ve had to do since the big boxes came along.” For years the store was also known for its bridal registries and free gift wrapping,” Debbie said. “They didn’t need three hardware stores on one corner, so we diversified, and we’re more gifts now with less hardware, and we’ve been that way since 2003. It’s about time. We have four grandchildren, two on the coast and two here in town, so we hope to spend more time with them and travel. It’s been a good trip.” Current co-manager Alice Kring, an employee of the store since 2000, said it will be a new chapter when the store closes. She said she will forever cherish the generations of families who have come through the doors and the customers who quickly became family. You don’t have to work at a bar to know everybody’s name,” Kring said. “They walk in and we have a lot of repeat customers.” Co-manager Ellen Chapman has been with the store for 15 years. “I’ve met so many customers wonderful that keep coming back,” Chapman said. “They are also like family and it will be very hard to say goodbye to them.” The grateful Dobsons repeatedly thanked the Greer community, its loyal customers and its employees who have stood by them over the years. The store will begin its liquidation and discount sales on Wednesday, January 15. The doors will officially close after it’s all over. See the video above for the full story.

In December 2024, the owners of Dobson Gifts and General Hardware announced that they would soon be closing their doors after 80 years in business.

Located on Wade Hampton Boulevard, co-owners Terry and Debbie Dobson reflected on their time serving Greer and the surrounding communities.

“It’s kind of bittersweet and I’m getting old,” laughed Terry. “It’s about time. I want to thank everyone in the community for 80 years of support and loyalty.”

According to the Dobsons, the store was opened by Terry’s father in 1945 at the corner of Main and Poinsett.

“Then in ’63, they moved to what was Community Cash and operated there from ’64 to ’99,” Terry said.

The Wade Hampton location in Greer opened in 1986 and is the last remaining store of the two that once operated at the same time.

“We were a gift hardware store,” Terry said. “Now we’ve had to move to more hardware giveaways. That’s what we’ve had to do since the big boxes came along.”

For years, the store was also known for its bridal registries and free gift wrapping, in addition to the hardware and gifts offered.

“Lowes came first, then Home Depot,” Debbie said. “They didn’t need three hardware stores on one corner, so we diversified, and now we’re more gifts with less hardware, and we’ve been that way since 2003. It’s about time. We have four grandchildren, two on the coast and two here in town so I hope you get to spend more time with them and travel.

Current co-manager Alice Kring, an employee of the store since 2000, said it will be a new chapter when the store closes. She said she will forever cherish the generations of families who came through the doors and the customers who quickly became family.

“You don’t have to work at a bar to know everyone’s name,” Kring said. “They come in and we have a lot of repeat customers.”

Co-manager Ellen Chapman has been with the store for 15 years.

“I’ve met so many wonderful customers who keep coming back,” Chapman said. “They are also like family, and it will be very difficult to say goodbye to them.”

The grateful Dobsons repeatedly thanked the Greer community, its loyal customers and its employees who have stood by them over the years.

The store will begin liquidation and discount sales on Wednesday, January 15. The doors will officially close after it’s all over.
