Elon Musk is a gamer, that much is true. He has spoken many times about various games he is involved with, previously Cyberpunk 2077 and most recently Diablo 4. But a few months ago some strange things happened when Elon started boasting that he was one of the best players of Diablo 4 in the world.
That was… true, technically. His account was actually in the top 20 Pit 150 in Diablo 4 for a while, globally. That raised a few eyebrows, wondering how he did it, but now that he’s moved on to a new, similar game, that game’s community isn’t having it. Elon is supposed to have god-level, ultra-suited, end-game suffocating characters in Path of Exile 2. Except the community and his pros say, no, he doesn’t.
There’s no reason to get too into the weeds here with hyper-specific Path of Exile terminology, but the bottom line is that Elon has some characters that are extremely high level with extremely powerful gear to the point where if you know anything about the game you understand the sheer amount of time it would take the game without life to earn all of this. Time no one can believe Elon has between his multiple companies, Trump administration DOGE duties, and tweeting a hundred times a day.
The accusation from the Path of Exile community here is not that he is cheating in a traditional sense, but that he has someone “pilot” or boost his account ie. play it for him or prepare him, or he is playing on someone else’s account entirely. A highlight of the trial was a recent X stream, which at one point had over a million viewers, where he plays end-game content for his powerful character. And he… doesn’t seem to know quite what he’s doing. At least not for someone who must have hundreds and hundreds of hours in the game already to be where he is.
I’ve watched the stream myself as someone with almost 200 hours and yes, there are a lot of red flags. Among them:
- Elon repeatedly tries to click on a map node that is not connected and you cannot click on them. It’s basically the crux of the entire endgame map.
- Elon’s inventory seems to be full of junk that he has no interest in getting rid of. He tries to get the maps later, seems confused that it won’t work, then manually drags them individually into his inventory, which isn’t how he gets things.
- Elon doesn’t play with any kind of personal loot filter, which is basically standard for any dedicated PC gamer. And he goes through the orb’s valuable coins without taking them, apparently not realizing their value.
- Elon doesn’t seem to know the difference between the level requirements for weapons and the actual level of the item itself, dismissing a powerful weapon as being too low, not making the distinction.
- During a boss fight, he doesn’t seem to realize he’s outside the monastery and remembers to only use his potion when he has to.
These may all be small things, but they add up to a picture of someone who doesn’t have to have such a strong character nor be one of the top-ranked players in the world (which, once again, he is). .
But he’s still fit right? This is hard content and he’s playing it, right? Well, sort of. I also have this character, an Ice Monk/Lightning Invoker, and while it’s not as min maxed as his, it’s also a stupidly easy build to play, basically two or three active abilities that you should use supported by a bunch of passive buffs. This character’s level, equipment, and arguably skill setup means that this character is mostly on autopilot for almost all of this content, except for maybe some of the climactic bosses.
There is a mixture of surprise and outrage from the community about this. I mean, it’s just ridiculous, why would he bother doing that? As creator Quin said in his video about it, it would be more interesting to watch Elon actually pick up and play a new game from the ground up than… whatever that is (this whole thing with these errors and lack of knowledge also seem to appeal to me as a Diablo player who has yet to understand all the details of the more complex PoE, where I was weeks ago).
But the Path of Exile community is also pretty sharp and many are calling for GGG to take action against him for boosting or splitting the account as this is against the TOS and other players will be banned for it. So far this has not happened, and it is difficult to produce clear evidence of this when no one has that data behind the scenes. I have asked X for comment regarding the status of Elon’s games and will update if I hear back.
Until then, I can’t wait to see Elon participate in Season 1 of Marvel Rivals, taking his beloved Iron Man model to the highest ranks of Grandmaster. See you then.
